Biography:

Majid Hashemi specialises in upper gastrointestinal surgery, with specific interests in gastric and oesophageal cancer, laparoscopic surgery, obesity surgery and reflux disease.

 He has developed a large tertiary referral service for patients with oesophageal and gastric disorders. Majid qualified from Manchester in 1988, obtained the FRCS in 1993 and completed his specialist surgical training in London and at Addenbrooke's and other hospitals in Anglia.

Since his appointment as a Senior Lecturer at UCL and Consultant to the Whittington Hospital in 2001 he has performed over 370 obesity surgery procedures and, with his colleagues, established a specialist multidisciplinary obesity surgery clinic (North London Obesity Surgery Service). Obesity surgery procedures offered by this service include laparoscopic gastric banding, laparoscopic bypass and sleeve gastrectomy and revision surgery.

He provides assessment and treatment for patients with oesophageal reflux or motility problems including those requiring revision surgeries. He also performs oesophageal and gastric resections for malignancy as part of the team at the designated Cancer Centre at University College London Hospital.

His appointment at UCLH will help in the further development of oesophageal and gastric surgery. He is actively involved in training, education and research and since 2001 has been the Undergraduate Tutor and site lead for academic surgery at the Archway Campus, UCL. He has initiated and led an advanced laparoscopic training workshop abroad which included live demonstrations, lectures and seminars on laparoscopic techniques and reflux related pathology.

He currently leads and supervises a number of active research projects in this field.
