What is the service that Essentially Medical offers?

We organise free non-promotional educational meetings that are held in GP premises during the lunch hour or early evening.   We recognise that GPs are often unable to find the time to attend meetings in central locations and so we bring the hospital consultants to the GP. This personalises the meeting, allows it to be “tailor made” and gives the opportunity for those attending to ask questions, and discuss particular cases. A buffet lunch is supplied for all the medical professionals attending the meeting. Consultants are generally from local NHS Hospitals. Pharmaceutical companies are invited to sponsor these educational sessions.

What is the extent of involvement from the pharmaceutical representatives?

If the pharmaceutical representative attends the meeting, they may either be there purely to support the speaker or may, if allowed by the surgery, wish to speak briefly about their product

Why would the industry sponsor meetings where they have limited or no opportunity to promote their products?

Increasingly, the industry is aware that the reputation of themselves and their company is a determining factor when healthcare professionals are looking to partner with the industry or when seeking reliable product suppliers. The representatives know they need to sell their products, however there are also times when they are simply looking to offer support.

The meetings we run are an excellent opportunity for them to support medical education, whilst also being available to answer questions you may have about their products.

Why can’t I organise this kind of meeting myself?

You can. Essentially Medical offers you an alternative option so that you do not have to make all the arrangements yourself. We also offer a wide variety of specialities from which to choose from together with an excellent service that is appreciated by healthcare professionals. We hope that you would be willing to use our services in the future, for example if there is a particular consultant you would like to visit your practice.

Are your meetings compliant with the ABPI Code of Practice?

Essentially Medical runs all its meetings in accordance with the requirements of the ABPI Code of Practice. We were concerned to make sure that we were compliant so we invited an industry specialist to assess our business practices. The certificate of assessment from Steven Gray Consulting Limited is openly accessible via our website and can also be sent to you on request. You can read it here.

How much are the consultants paid for visiting our practice?

Nothing. The sponsorship fee paid by the representatives is used to supply the buffet lunch and meet the administrative costs of Essentially Medical.

How much will the practice receive from the sponsorship fee?

Nothing. The sponsorship fee paid by the representatives is used to supply the buffet lunch and meet the administrative costs of Essentially Medical. Under the terms of the ABPI Code of Practice, the industry are not allowed to pay for the hire of rooms in general practice premises.

How do you organise the meetings geographically?

We have team leaders who cover their local area. For example, Ealing would come under the West London Team which is lead by Susan Lipman. However there are times when a consultant from a nearby team may substitute for a colleague. The website will show you all the consultants and their specialities as well as further information about Essentially Medical.

What is this?

I am happy to recommend the meetings put on by Essentially Medical. There is an excellent range of knowledgable speakers who welcome an interactive approach with the clinicians they address. The meetings are non-promotional and are geared to addressing our educational needs
